Lake of the Clouds (ft. Clouds)

Porcupine Mountains State Park (MI)

Since I’ve been posting a lot of wacky zoomed in stuff lately, here’s a wide shot from last fall. This is a pretty famous lake in “the Porkys,” very aptly named “Lake of the Clouds.” Most of the time you’ll see photos of this from the west side where the is a nice, accessible overlook. That’s better for sunrise, so I managed to find an overlook from the east side that involves a pretty steep hike up a mountain and no parking lot or obvious trailhead. Alyssa and I got there pretty early and met another photographer up there. It was insanely windy.

As I was chitchatting with the photographer whose name I will never remember, I went to set up my camera and… “wait where’s my tripod? F#$%!” At this point in my life I happened to be into distance running and was in pretty ok shape, so I ran down the mountain, grabbed my tripod from the car, and ran up the whole thing. For some reason I took a picture of my watch and tripod to show Alyssa how fast I’d ran: https://i.imgur.com/kydyhXM.png (unfortunately I don’t remember what this means, but let’s pretend I’m really fast). That was exhausting. The rest of the shoot was exhausting too, with all the wind.

So there’s a story about the stupid things I will do to take a nice nature photo.
